نُورCodex of Light

The light of the day · Monday 19 October

Everyday English carries Arabic inside it

Sugar, cotton, sofa, tariff, magazine, zenith, nadir, alchemy, alkali, algebra: dozens of ordinary English words travelled through Arabic scholarship and trade into Europe's languages. The words came with the things and the ideas they named.

الرَّوْضَة

Rawdah

The space in the Prophet's Mosque between his house and his pulpit, called a garden of Paradise.

The Prophet said that what lies between his house and his minbar is a garden from the gardens of Paradise. It is marked today by a green carpet where the rest of the mosque is red. Scholars read the saying two ways: that the ground itself is literally of Paradise, or that worship performed there leads to Paradise. Either way it is a place to pray in, not to touch, and crowding others out of it is not piety.
