The she-camel of Thamud

The story
Thamud inherited the lesson of 'Ad and carved their security into the mountains themselves, hewing homes from living rock 'with skill' (26:149). To them came their brother Salih. They demanded a sign on their own terms, and Allah gave them one that walked and drank: a she-camel, 'the she-camel of Allah' (91:13), with a simple covenant attached. She drinks on her day, you on yours. Do not touch her with harm.
It was a test of the smallest thing: restraint. The city's worst man was called for the job, and the tribe consented as he hamstrung her (91:14). The Qur'an's accounting is precise: one man cut, but 'they' killed, because approval is participation. Salih gave them three days. Then the sayhah, a single devastating cry, took them in their homes, and the carved rock kept standing over no one.
Centuries later the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed through their valley on the way to Tabuk and told his companions not to enter the dwellings of the punished except weeping. Ruins, in this tradition, are not tourism; they are sermons.
