The story
The people of 'Ad were the bodybuilders of ancient Arabia: giants of construction who raised 'Iram of the pillars, the like of which was never created in the lands' (89:7-8). Strength became their theology; 'Who is mightier than us?' they asked. To them Allah sent one of their own, Hud, with the oldest sentence of the prophets: O my people, worship Allah, you have no god other than Him.
He asked no wage, promised increase upon their strength if they sought forgiveness, and warned that towers do not negotiate with heaven. They answered with contempt. So the punishment came in the very shape of their pride: air. A wind, 'barren' (51:41), screaming cold, seven nights and eight days (69:7), that left the people like hollow palm trunks thrown down. The strongest tribe of the age was undone by something no wall can stop.
Hud and the believers were saved by mercy 'from Us' (11:58). His story stands in the Qur'an as the permanent answer to every civilization that mistakes muscle for meaning.
