The chapter
The hadith of the Ten closes its list with a note of finality: "and the last of that, a fire emerging from Yemen, driving the people to their place of gathering." After the gentle wind has emptied the earth of faith, the remnant world receives its final summons, written in flame.
The narrations in the Sahihayn give the operation's texture. It is a herding, not a massacre: the fire "gathers", tahshur, moving mankind as drovers move herds, "halting with them when they halt at night, resting when they rest at midday." Anas ibn Malik carried the Prophet's ﷺ answer to Abdullah ibn Salam's questions: "The first of the signs of the Hour is a fire that gathers the people from the East to the West." And in Bukhari's wording of the general muster: mankind will be gathered on three modes: "desiring and fearing; two on a camel, three on a camel, ten on a camel; and the rest gathered by the fire, which camps with them where they camp and rises with them where they rise." Civilization's last migration, at walking pace, in mixed transport, with fire for a rearguard.
The scholars parsed "first of the signs" in Anas's hadith against the sequence carefully, first of the signs whose kind is pure gathering, the hinge between the world's signs and the Hereafter's operations, and the Codex preserves their precision rather than a false neatness: this fire is the last event of the old geography. Its terminus, the reports state, is the land of Sham, the earth's oldest prophetic corridor, Ibrahim's destination, the Isra's first leg, the Descent's stage, now the assembly area for the species. "Sham is the land of the muster," the Prophet ﷺ told his companions when they asked where to stand.
There is a mercy folded even into this tile, and the Codex refuses to lose it: those driven are those who remained after every door had been held open, after centuries of minor signs, after the Dajjal's exposure, after a prophet's forty-year reign, after a reversed sunrise, after a talking sign, after the smoke's rehearsal of their own plea. The fire drives no one who was not first invited by everything else.
With mankind assembled on the plain of Sham, the old universe has one appointment left. Somewhere above, Israfil has been watching the Throne, cheek inclined, since before these signs began. The next node is the sound the creation was built to end on.
