The account
Israfil is the angel of the single deferred act: the blast. The Prophet ﷺ described his readiness in the hadith that reframes every calm afternoon: "How can I be at ease, when the bearer of the Horn has put the Horn to his mouth, inclined his forehead, and turned his ear, waiting for the command to blow?" The companions asked what to say in the face of that image; he gave them the words of Ibrahim: hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil.
He is invoked by name with Jibril and Mika'il in the Prophet's night-prayer opening, a trio the scholars read as the angels of life: revelation that gives hearts life, rain that gives earth life, and the blast that gives the dead their rising. His two blows are fixed in the Trumpet node: the stun that retires the universe and the rising that fills the plain. Between them, a wait of forty, whose unit the narration deliberately withholds. Every node of this Codex from the first tile onward has taken place inside the interval of his held breath; the Codex places him where he stands, at the hinge of existence.
