الرَّشِيد
Ar-Rashid
The Guide to what is right
- The rootر ش د
- From the rootrashada: to be rightly guided, to have sound judgement; rushd is maturity and good sense
The essay
Rushd is guidance from the inside: the settled good judgement of someone who no longer needs supervising. The Qur'an uses the word at the point where it forbids compulsion in religion, there is no compulsion, the right course has become clear from error, and the connection is deliberate. Rushd cannot be installed by force; if it could, it would not be rushd. The Name is from the enumeration; the meaning is the Book's.
In the Qur'an
لَآ إِكۡرَاهَ فِي ٱلدِّينِۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ ٱلرُّشۡدُ مِنَ ٱلۡغَيِّۚ
There is no compulsion in religion. Right guidance has become clear from error.
