The Ninety-Nine Names · the 97th name
الْوَارِث
Al-Warith
The Inheritor of all
- The rootو ر ث
- From the rootwaritha: to inherit, to receive what remains after the owner has gone
The essay
He inherits everything, and this is a strange thing to say about God until you see what it does. An heir is who a thing goes to when its holder is finished. The verse says We give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor, so everything currently held by anyone is in transit, and the destination is named. Your house, your work, your reputation, your body. All of it has one heir at the end of the chain.
In the Qur'an
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَٰرِثُونَ
It is We who give life and give death, and it is We who inherit.
