The essay
He remains. The verse is one of the most quoted in the Book: everyone upon the earth will perish, and there remains the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour. Baqi is not merely long-lasting; it is what is still there when duration itself has run out. Everything you can invest in has a term. The Qur'an calls the good deed al-baqiyat as-salihat, the enduring good things, using this same root.
In the Qur'an
وَيَبۡقَىٰ وَجۡهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ
And there remains the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour.
