Verses · a Light

The verse of light sits between rules about privacy

Surah al-Nur is a legal chapter. It sets penalties, deals with a false accusation made against Aisha, tells believers to lower their gaze, and instructs people not to enter houses without asking permission and giving greeting. At verse 35, in the middle of all that, comes the passage that gives this site its name. Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp in glass, the glass like a shining star, lit from a blessed olive tree neither of the east nor of the west. The image is an ordinary household object, seen at night.
