Sleep · a Light

He cupped his hands, recited three suras, and wiped

Aisha described what he did every night before sleeping. He brought his palms together, blew into them, recited the last three chapters of the Qur'an, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, then wiped his hands over as much of his body as he could reach, beginning with his head and face, and repeated the whole thing three times. During his final illness, when he could not do it himself, she recited and used his own hands to wipe him, because it was his hands that carried the blessing rather than hers. The practice takes under a minute. It is one of the few of his private habits recorded with enough physical detail that a reader fourteen centuries later can copy the movement exactly.
