A boy's hand wandering across a dish got three instructions

Umar ibn Abi Salamah was a child in the household, the son of Umm Salamah from her first marriage. He remembered eating beside the Prophet ﷺ and letting his hand roam over the whole platter. The correction he received was three clauses long: say the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you. He kept those rules for the rest of his life and taught them as he had received them. Nothing about the words is grand. They are what an adult says to a child at a shared dish, which is why they survived. The boy grew up, people asked him how the Prophet ﷺ ate, and he told them about his own hand being sent back to its own side of the plate.
