Table Manners · a Light

He never once spoke against a plate of food

Abu Hurayra said the Prophet ﷺ never found fault with food. If he wanted it he ate it, and if he did not want it he left it. Not one complaint about the cooking, the quantity or the temperature is recorded from him in a lifetime of eating what other people set in front of him, often in poor households that had stretched to feed a guest. The rule has an obvious target: the person who did the cooking. Whole cuisines have been built on seasoning at the table with criticism. His practice removed it entirely and left the diner two options, both of them silent.
