They cursed a man for drinking and were told to stop
A man in Madinah was brought in repeatedly for drinking and lashed for it. On one occasion someone in the crowd said, may Allah curse him, how often he is brought here. The Prophet ﷺ said: do not curse him, for by Allah, I know that he loves Allah and His Messenger. The punishment was carried out and the contempt was refused. Two separate things are being held apart: what a community does about an offence, and what it is entitled to conclude about the person committing it. Umar transmitted the report, and Bukhari placed it in the chapters on legal punishments, which is where the collector thought a prohibition on cursing belonged.
