Munkar and Nakir

The account

The grave is the first station of the Hereafter, and the sound tradition fills in its examination. Two angels come to the buried soul, sit him up, and ask: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man who was sent among you? The believer answers with firmness, for "Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in this life and in the Hereafter" (14:27), which the Prophet ﷺ said descended precisely about the questioning of the grave. His grave is widened, furnished from Jannah, and opened to its breeze. The hypocrite answers with history's most honest confession of secondhand religion: "Ah, ah, I do not know; I heard the people saying a thing, so I said it," and his grave closes on him.

The names Munkar and Nakir appear in Tirmidhi's narration; the questioning itself is in Bukhari and Muslim. The Prophet taught the living their part: stand at the fresh grave and ask firmness for your brother, "for right now he is being questioned," and seek refuge from the grave's punishment in the last sitting of every prayer. The Codex records the mercy inside the test: the exam's answers are not memorized; they are the residue of a life.
