Timbuktu was a city of books
At its height the scholars and families of Timbuktu kept hundreds of thousands of manuscripts on law, astronomy, medicine and faith: private libraries in the Sahara, passed down within families. Many survive today, still held by the descendants of the people who wrote and copied them.

الأَدَب
Adab
Good manner in a specific situation: the right way to sit, speak, eat, enter, and ask.
Where akhlaq names the character underneath, adab names the outward form it takes here and now, and most of it was taught by example. Classical scholars wrote whole books on it, such as al-Bukhari's al-Adab al-Mufrad. Some adab is fixed by the Sunnah, such as eating with the right hand, and some varies with place and custom, which is why a practice can be good manners in one country and odd in another.
