The essay
This is not a single word but a phrase, and it comes from a prayer the Book puts in the Prophet's mouth: Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and take it from whom You will. Four verbs follow in pairs, give and take, honour and humble, and the prayer ends with in Your hand is all good. Not half. The taking is inside the good, and the sentence does not flinch from saying so.
