الْمُمِيت

Al-Mumit

The Bringer of Death

The essay

Death in the Qur'an is not the failure of a system; it is an act, appointed and precise. Every soul tastes it, at a term that does not move forward or back by an hour. It is placed beside life in a single verse, indeed We give life and cause death, and the pairing removes death from the category of accident. It is not what happens when He looks away.

In the Qur'an

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَٰرِثُونَ

It is We who give life and give death, and it is We who inherit.

Qur'an 15:23

from the enumeration · the verse carries the meaning

What it asks of you

Nothing can kill you before your term, and nothing can delay it. That is either the most frightening sentence in this room or the most freeing, and it is the same sentence.
