الْمَتِين

Al-Matin

The Firm, whose strength does not tire

The essay

Where Al-Qawiyy is strength that acts, Al-Matin is strength that does not tire and does not thin out. The root describes the solid part: the back of an animal, the body of a text as distinct from its chain of transmitters. Human strength always has a term: the athlete slows, the empire ends, the will erodes. The verse pairs it with the Provider, and it is the pairing that matters, because provision that could run out is not provision.

In the Qur'an

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلۡقُوَّةِ ٱلۡمَتِينُ

It is Allah who is the Provider, the Owner of strength, the Firm.

Qur'an 51:58
