Waraqah ibn Nawfal
The first outside witness of the revelation: “this is the Namus of Musa.”
The account
Cousin of Khadijah, one of the hunafa' of Jahiliyya who had refused the idols, become Christian, and learned the earlier scriptures until age took his sight. When Khadijah brought her trembling husband after Hira, the old scholar listened and identified the visitor from the books he knew: "This is the Namus whom Allah sent down upon Musa." He read the road ahead, expulsion, enmity, war, from the pattern of every prophet before, and pledged the support he would never live to give: "If your day reaches me, I will help you with a strength unimaginable." He died within days. The Prophet ﷺ saw him in a dream in white garments, a believer of the interval, first ally of the final revelation.
