Ibn Battuta left Tangier in 1325 for hajj and kept going for 29 years: some 117,000 km across Africa, Arabia, India, Southeast Asia and China, leaving one of history's greatest travel accounts, the Rihla.

Shaving the head after the rites, which releases the pilgrim from the state of ihram.
The Prophet asked mercy for those who shave three times and for those who trim once, so shaving is the better of the two for men. Women never shave; they gather their hair and cut about a fingertip's length from the end. It is done after the stoning on the tenth for hajj, and after the sa'i for umrah.
