سُورَةُ البَيِّنَةِ

Al-Bayyinah The Evidence

8 verses · revealed in Madinah

The context

Al-Bayyinah is counted Madinan by most scholars, though a minority said Makkan, and it reads like a settling of accounts at the crossroads of religions. It addresses the People of the Book, Jews and Christians, and the idolaters together, and states the hard historical fact: they would not leave what they were on until the clear proof came, a messenger from Allah ﷺ reciting purified pages. Proof arrived, and then the painful irony the surah records: the People of the Book divided not before knowledge came but after it.

The surah holds a tender place in the Prophet’s ﷺ Madinah. He called Ubayy ibn Ka’b, the master reciter of the Ansar, and said: Allah has commanded me to recite to you Lam yakun, this very surah. Ubayy asked, did He name me? He named you, said the Prophet ﷺ, and Ubayy wept. The community learned two things at once: how high a single believer can rank in the knowledge of Allah, and how weighty this surah must be, chosen by name for such a recital.

The name

The surah is named for al-bayyinah, the clear proof, in its first verse: the messenger ﷺ himself, reciting purified pages. It is also cited as Lam Yakun from its opening words, and some early scholars called it Surat al-Qayyimah, from the upright religion it defines, several names for one argument.

How it moves

The themes

Proof precedes accountability

Allah does not condemn in the dark. The surah insists that judgment falls only after bayyinah, evidence so clear it leaves refusal without excuse.

The simple core of religion

Verse five compresses the entire law into sincerity, prayer, and zakah. The commands were never complicated; hearts were.

Splitting after knowledge

The sharpest tragedy in the surah: division caused not by ignorance but by pride after clarity, a warning aimed forward at this ummah too.

Best of creation

Khayru al-bariyyah: faith joined to works raises human beings above every created thing, an astonishing title handed to ordinary believers.

Mutual pleasure

Radiya Allahu anhum wa radu anhu: the final wage is not gardens but reciprocal contentment, Allah pleased with them and they pleased with Him, for whoever feared his Lord.

The heart of it

Al-Bayyinah slows the reciter down at verse five and asks an uncomfortable question: if the religion’s core is this simple, sincere worship, prayer, zakah, what is all my complication about? The surah diagnoses the disease of religious people in every age, dividing after knowledge, arguing past clarity, and it quietly relocates the problem from the head to the heart. Mukhlisina lahu ad-din, making the religion purely His: the reader begins to audit his own worship for hidden shareholders, habit, reputation, family expectation, and the surah scrubs them out one by one.

Then it lifts the ceiling. The best of creation is not a rank reserved for prophets; it is written over whoever believes and works righteousness. And the final verse names the wage above all wages, His pleasure and yours meeting, then folds it into a condition of four words: dhalika liman khashiya rabbah, that is for whoever feared his Lord. Awe, it turns out, is the door to mutual delight.

Verses worth knowing

On reciting it

The Prophet ﷺ said to Ubayy ibn Ka’b: Allah has commanded me to recite this surah to you, and when Ubayy learned that Allah had named him, he wept. A surah Allah singled out for such a recital carries its honor in that account.
