The context
Al-Qasas is Makkan and tells the early life of Musa in more detail than anywhere else in the Qur'an: the decree to kill the newborn boys, the mother instructed to place her child in the river, the palace of the man hunting him, the killing that made him a fugitive, ten years of shepherding in Madyan, and the return.
It came to a Prophet ﷺ whose own community was being ground down in Makkah and who would shortly have to leave the city that had rejected him. The surah is telling a man about to become an emigrant the story of another emigrant, one who left with nothing, worked for a decade in obscurity, and came back.
The name
Al-Qasas, the Stories or the Narration, from the moment Musa arrives in Madyan and tells the old man his story: and when he came to him and related to him the narration, he said, do not fear, you have escaped from the wrongdoing people. The surah is named for the act of a frightened man telling somebody what happened to him, and being told he is safe.
How it moves
- 1-13The riverFir'awn's decree, the mother's fear, the inspiration to place the child in the water, and the promise that he would be returned to her. He is raised in the house of the man who ordered his death.
- 14-28The killing, and MadyanThe fight, the flight, the shade where he prays the shortest du'a in the surah, the two women at the well, and ten years of work in exchange for a marriage.
- 29-42The fire, and the returnThe commission, the request for Harun, and the confrontation with a man who had claimed divinity.
- 43-60Addressed to MakkahThe surah turns from the story to the Prophet's ﷺ own situation: you were not on the western side when We decreed, and the objection that following guidance would drive them from their land.
- 61-88Qarun, and the closingThe man whose treasure keys weighed down a group of strong men, swallowed with his house, and the verse about seeking the Home of the Hereafter without forgetting your share of this world.
The themes
Rescue that runs through the danger
The child is saved not by being hidden from Fir'awn but by being raised in his house. The surah's idea of protection is not avoidance.
The long obscure middle
Ten years of shepherding are given a few words. The surah does not treat them as wasted, and a reader in the middle of their own decade of nothing visible should notice.
Wealth as a test that can be failed
Qarun is not punished for having. He is ruined for the sentence he says: I was only given it because of knowledge I have.
You do not guide whom you love
Revealed about the Prophet's ﷺ own uncle, and it is one of the hardest verses in the Qur'an for anyone praying for a relative.
The heart of it
Recited slowly, the verse that stays is the one Musa says in the shade at Madyan, exhausted, hunted, with nothing. My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need. He does not name what he wants. He describes his condition and stops, and the rest of his life follows from that afternoon.
The other passage that lands is the mother's. Her heart became empty, and she almost disclosed it, had We not bound fast her heart. The Qur'an records the exact interior state of a woman who has just put her baby in a river because she was told to, and does not tidy it.
Verses worth knowing
- 28:24My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You would send down to me. The shortest and most usable du'a in the Qur'an for a person at the end of their resources.
- 28:7The instruction to the mother of Musa: do not fear and do not grieve, indeed We will return him to you. Given at the moment she was told to let him go.
- 28:56You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. Revealed about the Prophet's ﷺ own uncle at his deathbed.
- 28:77Seek the Home of the Hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. Both halves belong to the same verse.
On reciting it
No authentic report establishes a specific merit for reciting Al-Qasas. It carries instead one of the most historically anchored verses in the Qur'an, 28:56, which the authentic collections record as revealed about the Prophet's ﷺ uncle Abu Talib at his death, and which settles a question every believer with an unbelieving relative eventually asks.
