Ar-Ra'd The Thunder

The context
Ar-Ra'd sits at a boundary the commentators discuss: its voice is Makkan and its concerns are those of the Makkan period, yet some orderings place it among the Madinan surahs, and the early authorities differ. The honest position is that its period is disputed, and nothing in the surah's meaning depends on which view is taken.
Its setting is a demand for spectacle. The deniers wanted a sign of the kind they could point at, a mountain moved or a dead man raised, and the surah's answer is to redirect their attention to what was already falling on them: rain arriving on dead ground, thunder glorifying Allah in awe, and a revelation doing to hearts what the water does to the earth.
The name
Named for the thunder in verse thirteen, which is described as glorifying Allah with praise, as do the angels, out of awe of Him. The naming is characteristic of the surah: it takes the loudest ordinary thing in the sky and points out that it is already doing what the people demanding a miracle are refusing to do.

The themes
Signs over spectacle
The demand for a dramatic miracle is answered by pointing at rain, growth and thunder, on the argument that a person unmoved by these would not be moved by more.
What lasts and what is foam
The parable of the valley in flood, where the froth on the surface goes and what benefits people stays in the earth, is the surah's compressed theory of everything.
Remembrance as the settling of the heart
The most quoted verse in the surah is a plain statement of mechanism rather than an exhortation.
Delivery, not compulsion
The closing passage limits the messenger's responsibility, which is a mercy to everyone who has ever been unable to convince someone they love.
The heart of it
Recited slowly, this surah works on a specific kind of restlessness: the state of a person who is waiting for God to do something obvious before they will settle. It does not scold that person. It walks them past a series of ordinary things, water and fruit and lightning, until the demand starts to look like a way of not looking.
And then it gives them the sentence they were actually looking for. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest. Not entertainment, not resolution of their circumstances: rest, which is a smaller word and the only one that fits.

No authentic report establishes a specific merit for reciting Surah Ar-Ra'd. It is included in this companion at depth because of one verse, 13:28, which carries more weight in ordinary Muslim life than most whole surahs do.
