The Five Pillars · The House of Islam

Five deeds hold up an entire life. Watch the house rise, then walk through each pillar: what it is, why it stands, and where the Book and the Prophet ﷺ said it.

“Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, the pilgrimage to the House, and the fast of Ramadan.” · Bukhari 8 · Muslim 16
١

Shahada

The testimony of faith: the door of the house. Everything else in Islam stands on this one sentence, said with a believing heart.

The sentence that opens everything

Lā ilāha illa-llāh, Muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh
“There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Two halves, one door. The first half clears the heart of every false object of worship; the second binds it to the guidance brought by the final Prophet ﷺ. Saying it sincerely before two witnesses is how a person enters Islam; there is no ceremony, no intermediary, no fee.

Not a formula but a compass. The shahada is repeated in the adhan, in every prayer, and, believers hope, as their final words: for the Prophet ﷺ said whoever's last words are lā ilāha illa-llāh enters Paradise (Abu Dawud 3116).

“Faith has some seventy branches, the highest of which is saying lā ilāha illa-llāh, and the least of which is removing something harmful from the road.”· Muslim 35

“Allah bears witness that there is no god but Him, and so do the angels and the people of knowledge, upholding justice.”

Aal Imran 3:18

“Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge.” The surah the Prophet ﷺ called a third of the Qur'an.

What a prayer is

A cycle of light. Each prayer is built of rak'ahs: standing with Al-Fatiha, bowing (ruku), two prostrations (sujud), sitting. Seventeen obligatory rak'ahs a day, preceded by wudu, faced toward the Kaaba in Makkah.

The first question. Prayer is the believer's daily reset: five washes of the heart, as the Prophet ﷺ described a river at your door in which you bathe five times a day (Bukhari 528). On Friday, the Dhuhr prayer becomes Jumu'ah, prayed in congregation.

“Indeed, the prayer has been decreed upon the believers at appointed times.”

An-Nisa 4:103

“Establish the prayer: truly the prayer restrains from shameful and evil deeds.”

Al-Ankabut 29:45
“The first matter the servant will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, the rest of his deeds will be sound.”· Tirmidhi 413 (sahih)

Zakat

The pillar made of gold that refuses to stay in one hand. One coin in every forty, owed by wealth itself, so that no believer is ever left alone.

One coin in forty · watch the gold one

2.5% a year. Zakat is due on qualifying wealth (savings, gold and silver, trade goods) that has stayed above the nisab threshold for one lunar year. The nisab is the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver.

Purification, not charity. The word zakah means growth and purification: the Qur'an says it cleanses the wealth that remains (9:103). It differs from sadaqa, which is voluntary and unlimited.

Education only, not a ruling: rates for livestock, crops and business differ, and your madhhab and local scholars settle the details. The Codex teaches; it does not issue fatwas.

“Establish the prayer and give the zakat: whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah.”

Sawm

One month a year, the ummah turns its hunger into light. Ramadan, the ninth month, begins and ends with the sighting of the new moon.

The shape of a fasting day

Suhur · pre-dawn mealthe fast · dawn to sunsetIftar · sunset

From true dawn to sunset: no food, no drink, no marital relations, and a tightened watch on the tongue and temper. The fast trains taqwa, the awareness of Allah, and every year it lands on rich and poor alike.

Mercy is built in. The sick, travelers, the elderly, and pregnant or nursing women are excused, making up days later or feeding the poor instead (2:184-185). The month closes with the festival of Eid al-Fitr and a small obligatory gift to the poor, zakat al-fitr, so no one is hungry on Eid.

“O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa.”

Al-Baqarah 2:183

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” Hidden in Ramadan's last ten nights, the night the Qur'an came down.

Hajj

Once in a lifetime, if body and wealth allow: the journey where millions dress in two white cloths and no one can tell a king from a shepherd.

The days of the journey · 8-13 Dhul-Hijjah

Ihram إحرامAt the boundary (miqat): two unsewn white cloths, the intention, and the cry “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk · Here I am, O Allah, here I am.”
Tawaf طوافSeven circuits around the Kaaba, the House raised by Ibrahim and Isma'il.
Sa'i سعيSeven passages between Safa and Marwah, walking in Hajar's footsteps (2:158).
Arafah عرفةThe 9th day: standing on the plain of Arafah in du'a until sunset. “Hajj is Arafah,” said the Prophet ﷺ (Tirmidhi 889).
Muzdalifah مزدلفةA night under the open sky, gathering small stones.
Jamarat جمراتStoning the pillars where Ibrahim rejected Shaytan; then the sacrifice, echoing his obedience, as Eid al-Adha dawns for the whole ummah.
Tawaf al-IfadahHair cut or shortened, ihram released, and the pilgrim circles the House again.
The Farewell الوداعOne last tawaf, and the pilgrim leaves as the Prophet ﷺ promised: cleansed “as the day his mother bore him.”

The house stands. A testimony at the door, prayer in its rhythm, zakat in its bloodstream, a month of hunger turned to light, and one journey where every soul dresses the same. This is the architecture of a Muslim life.
