The chapter
"Indeed, the first House established for mankind was that at Bakkah, blessed, and a guidance for the worlds." Before the House rose, the valley had to be inhabited, and the Qur'an and Bukhari's long narration from Ibn Abbas tell how: Ibrahim left Hajar and the infant Isma'il in an uncultivated valley with a skin of water and a pouch of dates, by command. As he walked away she called after him: "Did Allah command you to do this?" He said yes. Her reply is one of the great sentences of tawakkul: "Then He will not abandon us."
When the water ran out and the child was writhing with thirst, she climbed as-Safa, then al-Marwah, running through the valley between them, seven times, and heaven answered with the angel striking the ground until Zamzam sprang. "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il," the Prophet ﷺ said; "had she left it, Zamzam would have been a flowing spring." Her desperate search became a pillar of Hajj: every pilgrim who runs the sa'i to this day is walking in the footsteps of a trusting mother.
Years later, father and son raised the foundations together, the working scene the Qur'an frames with its own soundtrack: "And when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House, and Isma'il: Our Lord, accept from us; indeed You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." Two prophets building with their hands and still afraid the deed might not be accepted. They asked for more: a nation submitting to Allah from their descendants, and a messenger from among them who would recite the verses and purify them, the du'a the final Prophet ﷺ meant when he said: "I am the supplication of my father Ibrahim."
Then the command that turned a building into an axis: "And proclaim the Hajj among the people; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel from every distant pass." One man's voice in an empty valley, answered by forty centuries of pilgrims.
The House would be corrupted with 360 idols, defended by birds in the Year of the Elephant, and purified at last at the Opening, but the prayer of its founding never changed: accept from us. The Path measures every monument against this one.
