The Ninety-Nine Names · the 39th name
Al-Muqit
The Sustainer, who gives each thing its measure
- The rootق و ت
- From the rootqata: to nourish, to give the measured daily food; qut, the ration that keeps a body alive
The essay
Qut is not a feast; it is the exact amount that keeps a living thing alive. Al-Muqit is the One who apportions that measure to every creature, watches over it, and has the power to deliver it. The Name gathers three things Arabic keeps together and English splits: nourishment, capability, and custody. He knows the ration you need, He is able to send it, and He is the one keeping the account.
In the Qur'an
Whoever intercedes for a good cause has a share in it, and whoever intercedes for an evil one carries part of its burden. And Allah has always been Keeper over all things.
