The essay
'Alim is knowledge of the thing; Khabir is knowledge of what is inside it. The root carries the sense of knowing by having gone into: the way a person who has worked the land knows the soil differently from a person who has read about it. He knows the inner state: the motive under the stated reason, the fear under the anger, the good intention inside the clumsy act. This is a comfort more often than it is a threat.

Would He who created not know? And He is the Subtle, the All-Aware.
