The essay
A king in Arabic is not merely the one who rules but the one who owns, whose command over a thing runs all the way down. Human kingship is always borrowed and always partial: a king owns land he did not make and will not keep, and cannot command his own heartbeat. His is the only ownership with nothing on loan in it. He owns the ones who obey and the ones who refuse, the moment of holding power and the moment of losing it. On the Day the question is asked aloud, whose is the kingdom today, no one answers, and He answers Himself.
In the Qur'an
فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡحَقُّۗ
So exalted is Allah, the True King.
