Fatimah · a Light

She asked for a servant and was taught a formula

Fatimah bint Muhammad came to her father with hands blistered from working a hand mill, to ask for a servant from among the captives who had arrived. He did not give her one. He told her instead to say, when she went to bed, subhanallah thirty three times, alhamdulillah thirty three times and allahu akbar thirty four times, and said that it would be better for her than a servant. Ali, her husband, reported that he never left it off after hearing it. The household in question was the Prophet's ﷺ own daughter and his cousin. Whatever the decision meant for the wider question of servants, it meant that the exemption did not start at home.
