My First Steps
Being Muslim is made of little steps that anyone can learn, even grown-ups. Finish a lesson, tap the button, and light your star.
١ The Big Sentence
The whole religion fits in one breath
Every Muslim in the world, every grandmother in Makkah, every kid in Canada, agrees on one sentence. It's the first thing whispered to babies and the password of the whole ummah:
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadun rasul Allah
There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.
That's it. That's the key to the whole house. If you can say it and mean it, you're in the family.
٢ Wudu, Getting Sparkly
Before we pray, we wash, like getting ready to meet Someone important. Because we are.
Start with Bismillah, and remember: wudu isn't a race. Water is precious, the Prophet ﷺ used only a little, even beside a river.
٣ The Five Prayers & Their Skies
Each prayer has its own sky. Watch the window and you'll always know which one it is.
before the sun wakes up★★
when the sun is highest★★★★
golden afternoon★★★★
just after sunset★★★
when the stars come out★★★★
Each ★ is one rak'ah, a round of standing, bowing, and touching your forehead to the floor (the closest place to Allah you can be!). Learn them slowly, one prayer at a time. Try Five Lanterns to practice!
٤ Little Golden Words
Tiny sentences that turn ordinary moments into treasure
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Bismillah
"In Allah's name", before eating, drinking, or starting anything
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Alhamdulillah
"All thanks belong to Allah", after eating, after sneezing, after anything good
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
"In Your name, O Allah, I sleep and I wake", the goodnight du'a (Bukhari 6324)
٥ The Secret Level: Kindness
Worship isn't only on the prayer mat
The Prophet ﷺ taught that smiling at someone is charity (Tirmidhi 1956), that Allah loves gentle hands, and that the best Muslims are the best to their families. So:
🌟 Say salam when you come home · 🌟 Help without being asked twice · 🌟 Don't waste water or food · 🌟 Be soft with animals · 🌟 Tell the truth even when it's squeaky-hard
Every one of these counts on your scale. That's the secret level most grown-ups forget.
For parents · the minimum & the reasonable maximum
The floor: children are invited to pray from around seven and expected to keep the habit from around ten (Abu Dawud 495 · hasan), but accountability before Allah begins only at maturity. Before then, everything is practice, and practice is meant to be praised, not policed.
The reasonable ceiling: a child who loves five short prayers will outgrow a child who was forced through fifty. Add Qur'an in verses, fasting in half-days, and let them see you loving it, the sunnah of teaching is patience: "Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all things" (Bukhari 6927).
The Big Codex has the whole story when they're ready: the Path · the Mushaf · the 25 Prophets.
